I regret that I waited so long before I went back. I should have gone back 20 years ago when it was first possible. Culture shock. The progress between 2003 and 2007 is so great that it is almost shock to go back again after only 4 years.

The popular attitude toward the old war is quite different from the official one. The young folks may show an interest for a moment but then say it is irrelevant. The older ones, the ones who experienced it say it was fated to happen. It is long over and they don´t want to relive it, to remember it. Old soldiers who go back chasing ghosts often make the mistake of assuming there must be resentment of the Americans for the war and try to apologize to whomever they talk to for American actions and are disconcerted when they don´t want to hear it. It is Fate and nothing of it adheres to you and me. More tea? Americans have a hard time understanding Fate.

Mondulkiri is an eastern province of Cambodia, bordered by Ratanakiri to the north, Vietnam to the east and southeast, Kratie to the southwest and west, and shares a very small border with Stung Treng to the north. It is the most remote and sparely populated province with the total inhabitants of some 36000, and 80 percent of which is made of ten different tribal minorities, with the majority of Phnong. A base at the provincial capital of Sen Monorom is recommended during your visit in Mondulkiri as there are easy accesses to restaurants and guest houses. The province’s appeal lies on the perfect weather and the stunning view of long grassy hills, dense forests, wildlife and majestic waterfalls, which all help earn Mondulkiri the candidateship of Cambodia’s eco-tourism.

Awww, your dad gave you a really meaningful comment. I do believe that "We are really all one too". Very nice observation Hao, and your mind is very artistic for putting it together as a poem like this.

What I thought was most interesting is the paragraph about the prostitute, "she asks for a light" and I thought it was somekind of abstract saying that she wanted guidance or a new beginning, but it turned out to be a light for her cigarette. So that part I thought was really creative.

Back to your dad's comment about building more awareness as we grow or mature. I've also learned this over the break. People go through 5 stages of life. When you're little, you think of yourself only, little bit older - you think of your family, older - think of the community, much older - think of your country, and wayyyy older - you think of the world.

I think this trip probably have made you realized a lot of stuff. I can see that your Viet is getting better too. I hope that you will continue keeping in touch with Vietnam.
